Woodland

Graig Wood is an Ancient Woodland on the outskirts of Porthcawl, South Wales.

It is designated as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation and protected by a Tree Preservation Order.

Community

A unique opportunity for volunteers to experience woodland management.

The woodland is available as a valuable resource for community group activities, wellbeing, and woodland craft.

Education

It is a resource for educating and inspiring an understanding of nature conservation.

Highlighting the vital role that biodiversity plays within a woodland ecosystem and the local environment.

Richard is a qualified arborist with over 20 years of experience in tree care and management. Passionate about delivering professional advice within the urban and rural treescape, he specializes in tree planting, pruning, and assessments.

He is currently managing a 40-acre estate in which the woodland is located.

Richard is committed to educating the community on the significance of trees and woodlands, emphasizing the importance of effective management practices.

Volunteer

We invite volunteers to join us for hands-on woodland management activities.

The first task will be to remove non-native invasive species in three locations within the woodland.

  • Honey fungus Armillaria mellea on the base of an Ash tree. It is a pathogenic fungus that can colonise trees decaying the wood leading to uprooting, stem fracture before or after it kills the tree. Bad news for the tree but an opportunity for others within the woodland.
  • Another great Saturday morning with the volunteers. Matt cleaving a piece of the fallen Beech. Cleaving large diameter timber allows you to move lengths of timber around and out of the woodland to be processed further for construction, furniture, charcoal or even firewood.
  • Thanks to all those who came along for the Halloween walk 👻 Another great community evening in the woods. 🌳
