Woodland
Graig Wood is an Ancient Woodland on the outskirts of Porthcawl, South Wales.
It is designated as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation and protected by a Tree Preservation Order.
Community
A unique opportunity for volunteers to experience woodland management.
The woodland is available as a valuable resource for community group activities, wellbeing, and woodland craft.
Education
It is a resource for educating and inspiring an understanding of nature conservation.
Highlighting the vital role that biodiversity plays within a woodland ecosystem and the local environment.
Conserving Ancient Woodland, enhancing biodiversity, and offering community learning
The project has been established to conserve this ancient woodland by improving its biodiversity.
We aim to remove any non-native invasive species, thin out the canopy and continue the traditional management technique of coppicing. This will allow more light to reach the woodland floor, and in turn, increase the natural regeneration and seed germination of native trees, shrubs and wild flowers.
While taking care of this natural resource, there is a unique opportunity for members of the community to learn woodland skills, craft, and the importance of sustainability.
Richard is a qualified arborist with over 20 years of experience in tree care and management. Passionate about delivering professional advice within the urban and rural treescape, he specializes in tree planting, pruning, and assessments.
He is currently managing a 40-acre estate in which the woodland is located.
Richard is committed to educating the community on the significance of trees and woodlands, emphasizing the importance of effective management practices.
Volunteer
We invite volunteers to join us for hands-on woodland management activities.
You’ll have the chance to learn about tree and woodland ecology, relax by the fire with tea and conversation, and immerse yourself in nature.
The first task will be to remove non-native invasive species in three locations within the woodland.
